remopping. then, less than two minutes into overtime of course -- remaining. then, less than two minutes into overtime, your heart plummets. >> did you stay up to watch? >> i didn't. look what happened. >> more on the caps' stunning loss coming up late are this hour. right now, let's get you started with your first look at weather. >> good morning. we've got generally some mild temperatures across the area to start your day. a couple of showers out to the west. not going to rain all day today. we've just got some scattered showers in the forecast. there is your radar. you can see the shower activity off to the north and west, north and west of hagerstown. the cloud cover and some of the cooler temperatures have started to work in. generally, we're in the upper 50s and low 60s to start your morning. i think we'll see a lot of clouds here at the beginning of our day. let's go on.

i want to show you the next radar. you can see that out to the north and west, we've got a cold front. it looks fairly impressive. i think by the time it gets in here this afternoon, it will just be some scattered showers. maybe an isolated thunderstorm. then later this afternoon, we'll get a few showers and the showers will linger into tonight and the first part of tomorrow. more details on that coming up in just a couple of minutes. high temperatures will be warmer than yesterday. we are expecting highs in the mid- to upper 70s, a little warmer than yesterday. back to you. >> thank you. those are the top stories we are following. an al-qaeda plot to bring down a u.s. plane foiled by the cia. the plot involves an upgrade the underwear bomb that failed to detonate on christmas day twoip. police arrested gloria

waking up feeling this. traffic flowing freely each way. northbound 5 at the beltway. that is where we had appear incident that had the roadway blocked. police or the scene to help direct you around. this happens to be the commute at the american legion bridge. no problems to report as you travel between montgomery county and tyson's. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. imetraffic. >> thank you. the big story this morning, the cia take down a plot by an al-qaeda affiliate. >> the bomb may have been able to get past metal detectors. fox 5's melanie alnwick is in the newsroom with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: the bomb is in the hands of the fbi. it is a grim reminder that al- qaeda in yemen is still active hi working to hit u.s. targets. the bomb was believed to be developed by the same al-qaeda bomb maker who did the first

underwar wear bomb in 2009 and two others in 2010. this one was designed to be up detectable. the bomb was also designed to be used in a passenger's underwear exploded by what is said to be a refined detonation system. the device is now being analyzed by u.s. explosives experts. >> to see exactly what it consists of, what the danger is from it and what threat it would pose. can it be detected? how is it similar to or how does it vary from previous devices. this is significant. it was serious. but americans were never at risk. >> the white house says president obama was told about the plot in april and was assured that the device posed know threat to the public. u.s. officials would not say where the cia seized the bomb. they said the would-be suicide bomber had not yet picked a target or purchased plane tick its. at this point, there are no

immediate plans to change security procedures at u.s. airports. >> reporter: a plea from i rockville man being held captive by al-qaeda will go unanswered. the obama administration will not make a deal with the terrorist group to secure waren weinstein's freedom. jay carney says president obama is aware of the video that was released over the wound that shows weinstein literally begging for his life. carney says obama is greatly concerned about weinstein's safety but it is a u.s. policy not to negotiate with terrorists. >> our hearts go out to him and his family. we condemn his kidnapping in the strongest terms and call for his immediate release. the u.s. government will continue making every effort to see mr. weinstein released safely to his family but we cannot and will not negotiate with al-qaeda. >> the 70-year-old was kidnapped nine months ago in pakistan. al-qaeda says he will be freed for the u.s. stops its apacks in pakistan, afghanistan, yemen

and somalia and releases all al- qaeda and taliban prisoners around the world. a couple of teachers in montgomery county are charged with sex abuse offenses. police say a teacher had inappropriate contact with children. he had been head of the audiovisual department at northwood high school in silver spring. police have made appear arrest in a deadly case of suspected road rage. gloria mcmillan of alexandria is charged with felony hit and run. police say she hit and killed shalinda harrington. witnesses say she got out of the car, got into an altercation with another driver and that is when she was hit. five men have been found guilty for their roles in a

series of shootings that left five young people dead and several others wounded. the 2010 spree started because of a stolen bracelet. they included this mass shooting scene on south capitol street. three of the men are facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. the other two men could get life in prison. sentencing is scheduled for september 11th. settlements have been reached in the lawsuits over d.c. breathalyzers. the district has agreed to pay about $20,000 to four people who challenged the drunk driving convictions because of flaws in the police department testing equipment. all four claim the department failed to properly calibrate the breathalyzers and the prosecutors continued to rely on the scores even after knowing that the machines were flawed. the settlements were revealed in court documents on monday. rick santorum finally endorses mitt romney. the endorsement from romney's

bitter rival came in a late night e-mail to supporters. in it, santorum urged them to deny president obama a second term. romney is expected to add more delegates from today's primary. polls are opening in north carolina, indiana and west virginia later this morning. to sports now, this has julie wright and a whole lot of you crying your eyes out. game five between the caps and rangers in new york. it got ugly. washington scored two unanswered goals to take a one- goal lead in the third. with seconds left in the game, the rangers go on a power play and pull their goalie. brad richards scoring with 6.6 seconds to go to force overtime. in overtime, the rapers were still on the power play. they win the face-off and mark stahl slaps home a game winner. game six tomorrow night in d.c. some new details concerning the health of chuck brown. >> straight ahead, new information from his family including an update on his condition as he recovers in the

it looks like chuck brown is recovering from pneumonia. according to the "washington post," his daughter revealed the information yesterday. sources say he was admitted to the hospital after complaining of arthritis. this is when doctors discovered and removed a blood clot. he contracted it pneumonia while recovering from the operation. brown recently cleared his may concert calendar canceling all scheduled performances. no early elects in israel after all. after netanyahu canceled some snap elections. the prime minister got support from the biggest opposition party to form a coalition government. the agreement overides netanyahu's announcement yesterday over early elections

we are a little bit milder than we were yesterday. quantico, 66 degrees. 50s off to the north and west. manassas, good morning. 59 for you. 59 the winning number across the region. gaithersburg, 59 and let's see frederick, 59 as well. leonardtown, you are 59. temperatures today will be warmer than yesterday, into the 70s. our winds have shifted. we've got the southerly surge and our temperatures should be well into the 70s. we are thinking mid- to upper 70s for daytime highs. there you can see a precipitation shield, what we call rain, a lot of rain off to the north and west. i don't think we'll see a lot of rain today. i think it will feel kind of threatening out there particularly this afternoon with mostly cloudy skies. but i think most of the shower activity will hold off until mid- to late afternoon. then it will just be kind of light as we watch this frontal system move through. as the cold front moves through later tonight, it will hang up across the area and we'll watch an area of low pressure kind of
